Course Title: Assertiveness Skills

Description: This course looks at why some people are more assertive than others and how this "assertiveness" is communicated. By focussing on the actions that are involved in assertive behaviour, participants improve and develop their existing communication skills, while at the same time gain confidence in their ability to deal with everyday potentially stressful situations.

Aim: The aim of the course is to show what assertiveness is and how it is communicated. After practising the traits of assertive behaviour participants will have the confidence to employ this behaviour as and when they see fit.

Objectives: At the end of the course participants will have:

• A clear understanding of exactly what we mean by Assertive behaviour
• Identified how our individual rights can be lost in everyday communication and how we can take steps to protect these rights
• Identified where they see themselves in relation to the various behavioural types that exist
• Identified and questioned as to why we, as individuals, may react to certain situations in a non - assertive manner
• Learned the Steps to Assertion
• Mastered the strategies to adopt in order to say "No!" assertively without causing offence
• Practised how to use the Steps to Assertion in everyday situations
